CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The sights and sounds of a dying community were too much to take in all at once. The burning buildings and wrecked vehicles became one big blur as Spencer did his best to navigate the remaining distance to the Turtle Hospital. Trying to maintain a respectable pace wasn’t easy with so much going on around him, but it was clear that staying in one place for too long was asking for trouble. He fought the urge to abandon caution and sprint the rest of the way there, thinking it was still a good idea to remain unseen if he could.

The occasional person or small group of survivors, frantic to find shelter someplace less terrible than where they were running from, caught his eye here and there. He’d been worried about carrying the AR-15 and drawing attention to himself, but nobody seemed to pay him any mind. They were all preoccupied with escaping this hellish nightmare in any way they could. And who could blame them?

Spencer stopped in his tracks; he knew better but couldn’t help himself. Some unlucky tourist was trapped on the third-floor balcony of a hotel across the street. The man was on fire and flailing about wildly, which only served to spread the flames. Spencer could hear his screams clearly from the street. Finn whined nervously as they watched the scene unfold.

The man violently flung himself against the confines of the balcony until he hit the railing and it gave way. The flaming body tumbled through the air, landing in the street below with a dull thud. Spencer looked away but not for long. There was no unseeing what he’d just witnessed, and he was sure the image would be on tap indefinitely, along with all the other disturbing events he’d involuntarily committed to memory tonight.

“Let’s go.” Spencer forced himself to turn away and focus on Finn for a moment before continuing on. He hadn’t been sure what to expect when they got ashore, but he’d never imagined things would be this bad. Finn was more than happy to keep moving and lead the way. They were close now, and he and Finn broke into a run, using the sidewalk to cover the remaining distance to the hospital property.

Compared to the resort grounds, the Turtle Hospital was utilitarian in design, lacking fancy landscaping or elaborate buildings. The property was made up of several smaller structures spread around a collection of large pools. The building Spencer had seen burning from the water on their way in was the boat house. So far, the rest of the place looked untouched by the surrounding fires.

He made his way through the parking lot; it was empty except for a couple of burned vehicles at the edge of the property. Spencer noticed the brick walls of the bank next door were charred but still standing. The same could not be said of the roof, which had long ago given way and collapsed in on the structure. Many of the homes and businesses in the area were concrete and block structures, but the roofs were a different story.
